Five ingredients of Mexican Cuisine

Mexico is one of the most diverse countries located in southern United States, especially when taken into account its cuisine and taste. Mexico is also the world’s one of the most popular holiday termini enticing people especially looking for sun bath and good food at the same time.

The food regimen of Mexican populaces consists primarily of corn, beans, peppers, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, and herbs. Meanwhile, chocolates which are considered intrinsic to this country is considered a drink of the royals. While in Mexico you can find a plethora of delicacies from burritos, guacamole, Chilaquiles made out of corn tortillas topped with ‘salsa’ served with a healthy dose of frijoles (re fried beans), Tacos al pastor, tostadas dish involving corn tortillas fried in boiling oil until they become crunchy and golden, soups such as pozole, chiles en nogada, etc.

Here, we mention the important five ingredients of Mexican cuisine-

  1. Corn

In Mexico, the corn is termed ‘elote’ which is conventionally boiled and served hot in cups with toppings of salt, chili powder, lime, butter, cheese, mayonnaise or cream. Sometimes the boiled corns are also served on a stick with its kernels intact on cob. In addition, corns are also boiled to yield an energetic corn stew named as pozole. Corn is the basis of the Mexican diet, found in almost every meal, usually in the form of the tortilla, tacos and enchiladas that are basically a flatbread. Thesetortillas, tacos and enchiladas are enriched with combinations of meat, beef, bean, rice, chicken mole, seafood, pork, potato, vegetables and cheese peppered with chili sauce.

  1. Chilies or Peppers

Mexican cuisine includes avariety of chilies, also known as hot pepper mostly used either in smoked, dried, fresh or picked form. The handful of chilies widely known as jalapeño, poblano, serranoand chipotle offers a distinctive flavor boosted with valuable herbs like cilantro and thyme; spices like cumin, cinnamon and cloves. The hotness of chili owes to its substance called capsaicin found in the veins and seeds of chili.

  1. Beans

Beans are mostly used in Mexican cuisine, well-known as frijoles with main types being the “pinto beans” and “black turtle beans”. The black turtle beans are used to make several dishes like the refried beansbean, salads, soups etc.

  1. Avocado

Avocado is a popular Mexican ingredient, used in both salsas and to make a dish popularly known as guacamole which is prepared from mashed avocadoes, onions, tomatoes, lemon juice and chili pepper served with tortilla fries and plated as one of the side dishes.

  1. Local Carbs, Herbs and Seasoning sources

Rice, flour and cheeses are the staple food ingredient in Mexican palate either in the form of side dishes or in the main ingredients of cakes, tortilla or tacos which is the heart of the distinctive Mexican mealtime.

Coriander

The green “Coriander” or “cilantro” is one of the best frequently used garden-fresh herb in Mexican culinary.

Lime

Another one is lime which is extensively used in salsas, some marinades and margaritas.

Tomatillos

Tomatillos are small green tomatoes, in fact a member of the gooseberry family having a very acerbic flavor commonly used in preparation of salsas and stews.

Spiced Coffee/ Chocolate

Mexican chocolate is dark and bitter chocolate flavored with cinnamon, almond and cloves. Another delicacy a “Mole (MOH-lay)”is comprised of different spices, including cocoa and peanuts or peanut butter.
