Sleep – A natural meditation

By Shagun, November 28, 2020 Posted in: Self care

Are you awake when rest of the world is sleeping? If the answer is YES…then you are not alone, tossing and turning on bed is the most common problem in this hectic life. If it is common problem then in no way, its small or less harmful. Sleep is utmost important and should not be compromised or taken for granted.

Sleep is just not a routine thing that we do. It is a natural way of meditation during which a number of processes take place inside us that relaxes, calms and rejuvenate us every night. So, it becomes one of the most essential parameters of your health. As how you feel when you wake up determines how you slept at night. So, here are some habits which will help you to take a good night sleep;

Fix your sleep timings: Our internal body clock also works as per our daily routine. So, first step is to fix it. Make it a habit to go on bed at fix time every night. Irregular sleep time disturbs this internal rhythm and affects mental alertness, hunger and heart functions. Hence it is always advised to sleep and wake up at fix time. Best time for sleep is 9 pm to 5 am, try to set your sleeping hours as much near to it as you can.

People who sleep for long time during day invites insomnia so make your afternoon sleep a nap of 20-30 min, not more than this.

Follow some routine: By this I mean, follow some rituals like put on your comfortable night wear preferably cotton loose apparels, brush your teeth, dim the lights around, wash your feet, give yourself foot massages or lucky enough ask your partner to do so. Actually, there are many acupressure points in feet, massaging  then relaxes your mind. Read a book (obviously in sufficient light) which sends signals to your brain that it is now sleep time. Trust me this works.

Correct posture: The best position for sleep is sleeping on your left side it increases the blood circulation, helps to clean intestine in a better way, prevent heart burn, doesn’t overload liver. Though people having back problem should sleep on their back this helps to keep their spine straight.

Appropriate direction: Other is direction related we all know magnetic waves moves from north to south. India being in northern hemisphere is towards north side itself. Keeping your head to the north for longer period put undue pressure on the head which is not so good. Therefore, any other direction other then north is okay.

Avoid some habit: Avoid caffeinated beverages  near bed time, too heavy or too light dinner, too much of water and alcohol. Extensive exercise also makes our mind alert so late evening gym may interrupt your sleep.

Avoid electronic gadgets: Gadgets like mobile, laptop I-pad, TV are harmful as blue light emitting from them affects melatonin, the sleep hormone, so it is strongly recommended but least followed advise. Switch off these gadgets at least an hour before  going to bed.

Follow these simple rules before going to bed and relish a blissful good night sleep…
