10 tips to stay fit in monsoon

By Shagun, June 23, 2016 Posted in: Self care

Monsoon means “Awesome mausam”  and we are on its onset, as water drops from clouds touches the Earth a wonderful smell (‘sondhi mitti ki khushbu’) engulf us, luscious green sightseeing fills everyone’s heart with joy and happiness, we all love to experience it.

This is one side of the coin the other side there is humidity, excessive sweating, many bacteria, virus borne diseases that almost try to ruin the pleasure.

Here are few caring tips and precautions you can follow to fully enjoy the “Awesome mausam”.

  1. Drink plenty of water – Humidity is high in monsoon and so is the heat hence body looses water in from of sweating leading to dehydration, so drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

2. Hot soups – Warm vegetable soups are very good options to have in rainy season. Soups are packed with goodness of vegetables this will help you to keep hydrated and guard you from cold, flu and viral diseases.

3. Herbs and spices – Increase intake of ginger, garlic, tulsi, black pepper, turmeric, cumin powder these are easily available in your kitchen and very useful in reducing indigestion problems and also boost your immune system. Use them in soups, tea and curries.

4. Ginger turmeric latte – This is a new name given to our ancient ‘Haldi Adrak milk’ which is great to have in this season and prevents us from cold, flu and throat infection.

5. Seasonal vegetables and fruits – Bitter gourd ‘Karela’ is best to eat in this season. Eat seasonal vegetables and fruits with due precaution of washing them properly, a good idea is to wash them with warm salty water. Seasonal vegetables and fruits give you wonderful supply of antioxidants and other micro-nutrients required to fight with seasonal diseases.

6. Eat light food and take early dinner – During monsoon season the digestive system becomes sluggish so avoid heavy food like non-veg, fried food and starchy food that takes longer time to digest. If possible take your dinner max up to 8 pm and be active for at least two hours after that, so it can go easy on your stomach and you can feel light.

7. Eat fresh – Try to eat freshly prepared food as much as possible, as microbes (bacteria and viruses) are highly active and they start spoiling food very soon so grab your brunch within two hours of cooking. Strictly avoid stale food in this season.

8. Avoid street food – Hygiene is the biggest concern with the outside food so avoid eating out and if you have to do so choose a well reputed restaurant.

9. Prefer cooked over raw food items – Possibility of getting caught by germs of raw or uncooked food items is higher, so avoid them in this season. Having them may lead to health problems like typhoid and jaundice.

10. Be cautious on sea food – Sea food like fish, prawn, etc should be avoided as it’s their breeding season. It may cause stomach infection and food poisoning in the worst case, if you can’t resist make sure they are fresh.

So follow the ten easy tips to be safe and healthy in monsoon, eat right and enjoy the rains to relish your life.
