Ayurvedic detoxification

By Shagun, June 23, 2019 Posted in: Self care

Detoxification in simple words, is the process of removal of toxic wastes or toxins from our body.

Why do we need detox?

In today’s fast pace life and polluted environment, we are daily exposed to various chemicals pollutants, heavy metals suspended in air, by inhalation. On the other hand, outside, processed and packaged foods also bring in the toxins.

The food which does not directly comes from mother nature goes very hard on our digestive system. It takes very long time to get digested and mostly gets stuck in large intestine and forms thick coating. This coating then becomes the most favorite place for numerous bacteria, viruses and molds. This coating in intestine interferes with the absorption of nutrients and also causes constipation.

There are chances that these toxins get transported into blood stream and gradually gets accumulated beneath the skin. This deposition results into acne and other skin issues. These toxins can also reach to lungs and can be a cause of Asthma.

If we manage to eat hygienic home-made food, still ill impact of pollution cannot be avoided, toxins get into body by inhaling, for sure we cannot stop breathing to avoid inhaling of toxins. Hence it becomes very important to flush out the toxins from our internal system.

How to do it?

Simple and very inexpensive way to do it is ‘oil pulling’. Put 1-2 tbsp oil in your mouth on an empty stomach, swish it for 10-15 mins. Preferably before brushing your teeth. Initially this seems to be long time but gradually you will get hang of it and can increase this up to 20 min. You can undertake daily routine work while swishing. Once you get used to it you will find out more ways to get hold of it, I am sure the benefits will keep you motivated.

Which oil to use?

Olive, mustard, sesame, coconut oil; You can use any of the cold presses edible oil for swishing as per your choice. Personally, I will recommend, start with coconut oil as it is least offensive. Other oils have a pungent smell which can be distracting.

What is the science behind this?

Our tongue is connected to various organs kidney, small intestine, heart, etc through network of veins. You must have noticed whenever we fall sick and seek a doctor, he/she examines our tongue along with other general observation. The condition of tongue gives a feedback of our internal health. When we swish toxic micro-organisms which are lipid coated, gets sucked toward tongue traveling through veins. When we spit out the swished oil these toxic microbes also get flushed out. Notice the change in color and consistency of spitted oil, the change is by the micro-organism getting dissolved in oil.

The results:

Surely, I can say you will feel visible positive change in your oral health, skin glow, migraine or headache etc. This practice gives fantastic results to oral health, your teeth and gums at first and followed by improvement in digestion, easing constipation and bettering overall health.

Precaution to be taken:

Do not swallow the swished oil, it will send all waste back to your system. Do this before brushing your teeth in the morning.

So, try ‘Oil pulling’ a simple ancient ayurvedic method of internal cleansing and keep on relishing a toxin free life…
