Handling Craving

By Shagun, May 30, 2021 Posted in: food facts, Self care

You had your meals a while ago and you are feeling strong desire to munch on, you look for junk foods, sweets, cakes chocolates etc to quench the Craving? If yes, then read on… this article is for you.

If the desire of craving is rare one- or one-off case then it is not a matter of concern but if it is persistent then you need to resolve it as it is damaging you gradually.

Why Craving happens?

Usually when we are hungry our brain gives signal, but here these signals are false signals and indicating some sort deficiencies or sometimes some kind of hormonal imbalance (specially leptin and serotonin). Mostly this shows some acidic effect in your digestive system.

What do you crave for?

You must have noticed that we never crave for a healthier option, have you ever craved for an apple or guava? We always binge for unhealthy things junk, sweets, etc. Eating sweets by your choice or taste is perfectly ok but if you notice a repeated craving then it definitely demands attention. This craving interferes with your fitness goals so keeping your health goals in mind you need to learn how to stop this craving.

How to control Craving:

  1. Never stay hungry for too long: Prolonged hunger leads to no choice of food you binge on whatever you get so, avoid this. Eat only when you hungry but never starve yourself.
  2. Drink water: Sometimes actually you are thirsty and you feel as if you should eat some sweets. So, sip on a glass of water your sweet craving will automatically will be pacified.
  3. Keep a healthier alternative handy: If you are out of the home, keep some healthy snacks with you so besides grabbing some unhealthy food you can relish your homemade food. Some of options are dates, figs, jeggery etc.

Interesting fact: If you finish your meal with small jeggery mixed with 1-2 drops of ghee and dry ginger powder you will not crave for sweets for sure.

  • Eat protein rich food: Ensure that you include sufficient amount of protein in your major meals. Protein takes longest time to get absorbed in your blood stream so it keeps you full for a longer period of time. Also helpful in weight management.
