Reality check of aerated drinks

By Shagun, May 26, 2019 Posted in: food facts

As summers are now on peak, we all search for some drinks which can quench our thirst. If you are at market and searching for some cool drinks, there are numerous choices of aerated drinks over the stores. It can give you chilling relief in the scorching summer but have you ever read its label? When you dig deeper you will know the truth behind these ingredients which are chemicals and have a better place in chemical lab besides going inside your body.

First, they are overloaded with sugar content as high as 300%. Diet variant contains artificial sweetener in good amount.

Here is a breakdown of ingredients of aerated drinks-

  • Carbonated water: This is plain water infused with carbon dioxide to give the gaseous feeling.
  • Added flavor: Mainly this is artificial flavor for taste.
  • Caffeine: It is a diuretic and the stimulant in it is addictive.
  • Caramel color: it is a chemical, methylimidazole which is synthetic.
  • Phosphoric acid: Acid when added to soda it breaks down starch to sugar and liquid gives a tangy/sour taste.
  • High fructose corn syrup: It is of no nutritional value just empty calories so ranked among top five unhealthy things.

So now you must be clear as you sip on/gallop these drinks what you are actually sending in your valuable digestive system is high amount of sugar at a time for which your pancreas will be in lot of pressure to balance the sudden increased blood sugar level. Here I would like to share this high amount of sugar cuts down the immunity to half for next 5-6 hours and if you are exposed to some foreign bodies which could also be carcinogen, you are more likely to catch that disease in no time.

This excess sugar gets stored as fat and leads to weight gain.

Caffeine on the other hand is dehydrating so in summers when you should have enough amount of water in your cells these drinks results in extracting water from your cells. Excess amount of it also makes you sleep deprive.

Phosphoric acid leaches out calcium from the bones making them porous and prone to osteoporosis. This acid interferes with the nutrient absorption and their utilization.

This analysis must be enough to quit these aerated drinks and choose our indigenous summer drinks which are full of nutrition and quench the thirst of our cells too.  There are various options are lassi, chhach, lemon shikanji, thandai and various sharbats read at link Goodness of Indian summer drinks.

So, relish your life and quench your thirst in summer with healthy alternates and stay hydrated in real terms…
